As August comes to an end, we draw closer to the start of the next school year. Kids have their school supply shopping lists and are getting ready to pick out new clothes and shoes.
Make a dental checkup part of your back to school routine. This is the perfect time to get it in, before your schedules are filled back up with school and activities.
At Sterling Dental Center, these are the things we will do at your back to school checkup.
- Teeth Cleaning
- Health Routines
The main part of the dental checkup will involve a thorough teeth cleaning. The first step is removing all of the built-up plaque and tartar. Once that has been removed, we floss your teeth to get rid of any lingering food particles.
The final step of the cleaning involves a polish with an electric brush and a paste. Your teeth will be nice and smooth afterwards.
Every visit, we always check for cavities, or tooth decay. After the cleaning, we will do an examination of your teeth using a mirror and metal probe. In addition to checking for cavities, we will also check your gums to ensure you don’t have gum disease.
If needed, we will do your annual x-rays. While these are not required every visit, we do take x-rays at least once a year. Depending on age and what is going on in your mouth, they may be required more often. We use x-rays to check on the teeth alignment, wisdom teeth placement, and we can see cavities forming.
During the last part of the checkup, we will talk about your current oral health routines. Are you flossing regularly? Ideally every day? If not, do you floss at all? Do you brush your teeth at least twice a day? What kind of brush do you use? What kind of toothpaste?
Based on your answers, we can provide advice for a stronger oral health routine including using a soft brush that you change every three to four months and flossing every day. The key to successful visits in the future is making sure you spend time every day establishing a good routine.
