With today’s hustle and bustle lifestyle, it can be really hard to establish good routines, especially for your family. At Sterling Dental Center, we understand that dental hygiene can go by the wayside when things get crazy so we want to provide some tips to establishing a long lasting dental routine.

Set Aside Time

The first step in any routine is figuring out how much time you will need. In the morning, set aside at least five minutes for brushing your teeth and using mouthwash. Look at your current morning schedule and figure out if you have this five minutes already in there. If not, plan to wake up five minutes earlier to ensure you have time for brushing and mouthwash.

In the evening, make sure you start your nightly routine earlier than usual so that you have time to floss and brush. Another trick for nighttime is to set a cut off time for eating and drinking (other than water). Floss and brush at this time so you aren’t tempted to skip either later when you are tired and ready for bed.

Create a Plan

After you’ve set aside some time, you can create a plan. What are you going to do each morning and evening? When will you floss? Will you use mouthwash every day?

Figuring this out and creating a plan will help you stick to it.

Get the Materials

Before you get started, make sure you have the right materials. Are you using a soft toothbrush? When was the last time you replaced your toothbrush?

Toothbrushes should be replaced every three months. Make sure you have a good toothpaste that meets all your needs: whitening, fresh breath, tartar control. Get one that does it all.

Just Do It

One of the hardest things to do with any routine is just start it. It is all too easy to set up a plan, get the materials, and then just not start it. Start with one day; brush in the morning and the evening, floss, and use mouthwash. Then just repeat it the next day!

Once you start incorporating these healthy steps every day, they become a habit and then a routine. Don’t forget your biannual cleanings in your overall dental health routine. Call Sterling Dental Center today to schedule your next checkup!
