Your smile is so important; for some people, it is their best feature. You can tell a lot about a person by their smile.
Do you like your smile? Are your teeth holding you back from smiling more often? If they are, you should consider Invisalign. Invisalign is a great option for adults (or teens) who want to straighten their teeth. The idea of metal braces as an adult is less than thrilling. All that hardware, while it might be worth it in the end, is hard to stomach. Luckily, Invisalign is an affordable, more discreet alternative.
So, what is Invisalign? How does it work? What are the benefits?
In this two-part series, we will tackle these questions, starting with what Invisalign is and how it works.
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is clear teeth aligners that are custom made on a case by case basis. The clear aligners are made using impressions of your teeth. This ensures that the aligners will work for you and your mouth. They are invisible and fit comfortably over your teeth.
How does it work?
The first step of the process is a consultation. During this consultation, we will assess your teeth and figure out which Invisalign option will work best for you. After your initial consultation, we will use a scanner or take physical impressions of your teeth.
Once we have the scans/impressions, we will create a treatment plan. Part of the plan will include how long you will use Invisalign. There are a few different options that vary in length. Additionally, the plan will show you the progression of your teeth. How they look now and how they will progress over the weeks until the aligners are complete.
After your consultation and plan creation, you will receive your aligners made from SmartTrack® material. Since they are invisible, you can go through your regular day as if you weren’t wearing anything; most people won’t even notice a difference! You’ll keep your aligners in for 20-22 hours a day, taking them out only to eat and brush and floss. If you don’t wear them the full 20-22 hours or take them out more often, you will not get the desired results. For example, if you don’t wear the first aligner set long enough, the second aligner set may not fit right.
Your teeth will lightly and slowly shift into place as you wear each set of aligners. It can vary by dentist, but typically you will wear each aligner set for one week and have periodic check-ups. You’ll be able to see your progress as your teeth are changing.
Once your treatment is complete, you will want to get a retainer to keep your newly straightened smile in place. Invisalign offers the Vivera® retainer, that is custom made using the same technology as the clear aligners. If you don’t opt for a retainer, or wear it regularly, your teeth will start to shift back.
