It’s only the second month of the year and already we’ve experienced some crazy weather in the Northern VA area.
In the beginning of January, we had some of the warmest days in between all the cold. For example, on the 12th the high was 70, while the very next day, the high was only 29. Meanwhile, record lows were broken everywhere. At BWI, a new record low was set on January 7th at one degree.
Temperatures were so cold that schools were closed for two days, even though there was little snow left on the ground!
Here are some things to keep in mind when the temperature drops so low.
Keep kids and pets inside
As hard as it can be for the kids to be inside all day, with the low temperatures and accompanying wind chill, it is safest to stay indoors and focus on indoor activities. Some fun activities we like to do are family game nights, puzzle parties, or even a themed movie night.
The same goes for our four-legged friends. Dogs can be especially sensitive to the ice that is used on sidewalks and streets, so make sure to wipe their paws when they come back inside. They get cold too, so make sure they have adequate protection from the cold. There are a lot of cute coats and sweaters available that will keep them warm!
Watch out for black ice
When it is so cold all the time, any type of precipitation can turn into ice. Black ice is especially dangerous because you can’t always see it. Take care when driving in the early morning or at night to avoid these slippery spots.
Just the other day, neighborhood sidewalks and streets completely froze over and were incredibly dangerous to be on.
Winterize your pipes
With the weather getting so cold and going from a warmer temperature to cold temperatures so quickly, your home’s pipes are susceptible to freezing. Even worse, they could burst. The last thing you want to deal with is a leaking or broken pipe. Reach out to your local plumber to make sure your pipes are ready for a month or two more of cold weather.
Make sure you are properly bundling up when you go out! Layers are your friend when its less than 20 degrees out. This is the best time to have fun with your winter accessories. Gloves, scarves, and hats will really help you stay warm with the frigid wind.
