6 Myths About Mouthwash
Are you using mouthwash after you brush and floss your teeth? Have you heard that it is not effective? Maybe you heard that it doesn’t actually help your teeth.
There is a lot of information floating around about mouthwash – some true and some false. Let’s go over the six most common myths about mouthwash so we can let you know if they are true or false and why.
1 – It makes your breath better
This is true. Mouthwash does in fact make your breath better especially after you have eaten something especially fragrant (onions, garlic). However, that is not all it does. Mouthwash can kill bacteria, prevent cavities, and can even whiten your teeth.
2 – It is dangerous to use during pregnancy
This is false. In fact, there have been studies that found women who used mouthwash as part of their dental routine while pregnant had a lower chance of preterm labor. Taking care of your teeth and gums is so important during pregnancy.
3 – It can replace brushing and flossing
This is also false! Mouthwash should never be used as a replacement for regular brushing and flossing. Mouthwash is effective when used in combination with brushing and flossing. Remember, the primary way to get rid of plaque and bacteria is daily brushing and flossing.
4 – It prevents cavities
This is true. When used with regular brushing and flossing, mouthwash helps prevent cavities by strengthening your teeth – when your enamel is strong, it is harder for plaque to form and break down the enamel. When plaque can’t stick to your teeth, cavities can’t form.
5 – It causes gum disease
This is false. Mouthwash helps prevent gum disease, not cause gum disease. By killing bacteria in the mouth, it reduces gum inflammation thus preventing gum disease.
6 – It is all the same
This is also false. There are lots of different brands and types of mouthwash. There are ones made with alcohol (you probably want to avoid these) or with fluoride. There are mouthwashes specifically for people with sensitive teeth. There are mouthwashes with whitening agents to whiten teeth. There is no one size fits all mouthwash – each person will require a unique mouthwash.
