Do Root Canals Hurt?

Most people have bad experiences with root canals because they did not numb properly. To make sure that you are the most comfortable, Dr. Bursich prescribes you an antibiotic to take before the procedure to ensure that you will numb properly and you will experience minimal discomfort.

Dr. Bursich will also prescribe you pain medication to make sure you will be as comfortable as possible.

Our Root Canal Procedure

Before recommending root canal therapy we collect a thorough history of any symptoms and perform an examination including dental x-rays. This aids in the accurate diagnosis of any tooth that may be suspected of needing root canal therapy. Dr. Bursich’s root canals are fast and comfortable thanks to the use of motorized rotary instruments and local anesthetic. A rotary instrument is a handpiece which allows Dr. Bursich to clean and shape the canals faster than using traditional hand files. If properly performed, and under normal circumstances, a root canal-treated tooth can last you a lifetime.

What is a Root Canal?

Correctly referred to as Root Canal therapy; it is a dental procedure that is used to repair and save a tooth whose pulp is badly decayed or infected. The pulp is the living part of the tooth made up of nerves and blood vessels. It can become infected or die through various reasons including decay, trauma and deep or incorrectly-placed fillings. During a root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed.

SIGNS THAT A ROOT CANAL PROCEDURE MAY BE NEEDED:

Swelling around the tooth or deep in the jaw. A bubble can form on the gum tissue that is filled with pus and blood.
Constant, moderate to severe tooth pain. The pain might feel like a dull ache or more intense as if the tooth seems to throb with every heartbeat.
Severe tooth pain. Pain that feels better when something cold is applied to the tooth and increases when something hot is applied to the tooth.
The pain is worse when you lie down and reduces when you are upright.
Tooth pain that seems to make your head, ear(s), eye(s), or neck hurt as well.
Pain when chewing or biting down on something. Even soft foods can seem to irritate the tooth causing soreness or severe pain.
Tooth sensitivity to sweets.
Pain that lasts for a long time after something cold is consumed.
There can also be no symptoms. This is called a chronically infected tooth.
