You knew this postwas coming. It is October, and that means Halloween is right around the corner. With Halloween comes endless amounts of candy. Everywhere you look there is candy being advertised or displayed.

The question is, do the dentists at Sterling Dental Center hate candy?

We LOVE candy. Candy is great for us. Because of candy, we have:

1- Increased Office Visits

Around this time of year we see an increase in office visits, especially for kids. There may not be a strong correlation between Halloween and the increase, but we do think that it serves as a good reminder for parents to get their children in for their biannual cleaning. If you realize that is time to bring your kids in, do it after Halloween, not before. This way their teeth can get nice and clean after the increase in candy consumption.

2- More Fillings

When you are eating a lot of sugar filled foods, especially in a short period of time, your teeth hold onto the sugar and the plaque feeds on the sugar, making the buildup even worse. This is the exact time that cavities start forming. If you had an area to watch, indulging in a lot of sticky and sugary treats this time of year, will only increase your chances of a full-blown cavity. Unfortunately, when you have a cavity, the only option is a filling.

3 – Opportunities for Education

One of the best things about doing something that you love is the ability to pass on your knowledge and the dentists at Sterling Dental Center enjoy talking with our patients and providing educational information. Halloween provides the perfect opportunity for us to provide information on candy and how it affects your teeth. As mentioned above, sugar basically provides fuel for the bacteria in your mouth and that bacteria builds up and weakens your teeth, sometimes causing cavities.

All jokes aside, we don’t hate candy, though it does cause a lot of problems for your teeth. Have a very happy Halloween and be smart about your candy consumption! Chocolate is always a safer option.
